Public engagement & Outreach
I am a strong advocate of public engagement and outreach with regular invited public talks and events on TV, radio, charities and conferences.
I regularly talk in schools and colleges to inspire the next generation of environmental scientists. Recent talks have included Colchester 6th Form College, St. Joseph’s College, Ipswich.
We recently had the pleasure of hosting Professor Leanne Hepburn from The Life Sciences Department at University of Essex for our Birkfield Talk. Her talk was incredibly insightful and thought-provoking, especially when it came to sustainability and the impact of increasing atmospheric CO2 levels on our planet.
Professor Hepburn gave us plenty of food for thought on the need for action to preserve our planet and we are even more motivated to take action. It's important for all of us to become more knowledgeable about sustainability and the role we can play in making a positive impact.
Not only that, but Professor Hepburn also shared her expertise on the exciting job opportunities available in this field. It's clear that the demand for experts in sustainability and life sciences is only going to increase in the future.
We're grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from such a knowledgeable and inspiring speaker. Let's all work together towards a better future for our planet!

Café Scientifique
Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Meetings take place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context.
Deep, dark secrets of the Mediterranean (May 2023)
There is a beautiful, undiscovered ecosystem in the Aegean Sea situated between Greece and Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean. Too deep for diving, an expedition using an ROVs (remotely operated vehicle) went to 100m and discovered coralline reefs - living structures made of algae, which attract colourful marine life and create a key ecosystem, bursting with biodiversity. Professor Leanne Hepburn from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Essex will explain that although they are one of the oldest and most complex marine ecosystems in the Mediterranean, they remain understudied and unprotected. The race is now on how to map and gain protection from trawlers which could destroy this hidden gem of the Mediterranean before we even know what is there.
